Program aims

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) aims to prepare midwives who meet current and future requirements of contemporary midwifery practice. This program is designed according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) National Competency Standards for the Midwife (2006). Graduates will possess a range of skills to work autonomously and where appropriate, with other members of the inter-professional team in a variety of maternity settings or models of care. Graduates will be eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency ().

Program objectives

1. Exhibit a midwifery philosophy that is respectful, dignified and woman-centred when working in partnership with childrearing women and their families within human rights and educational frameworks;

2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills aligned with core values of midwifery practice and collaborate effectively with partners considering historical, social and political influences;

3. Contextualise legal and ethical frameworks to demonstrate professional midwifery practice reflective of cultural awareness and the individuals rights to social justice;

4. Analyse and evaluate models of care, leadership and entrepreneurship to meet the needs of mothers and babies in contemporary society;

5. Provide safe, competent and woman-centred care for women, babies and families across the continuum of pregnancy, childbirth and transition to parenting within diverse cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic populations;

6. Integrate evidence based practice to inform clinical decisions and foster change in relation to maternity services and maternity care;

7. Apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, well-developed judgement and responsibility in the context of increasing clinical competence and safety in the delivery of professional midwifery practice;

8. Enable graduates to be eligible for registration and care of women as accountable, autonomous professionals.

Australian Qualifications Framework

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.

Admission requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements:

• A Registered Nurse (Division 1) with a Bachelor degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification with current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration.

• English Language Proficiency requirements for Category 3.

• Interview with Midwifery program representative and a service provider representative to demonstrate ability to commit to the requirements of the program (currently Tasmanian students only).

Please note: Satisfaction of admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Places within the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) program are limited by quota. Selection from applicants who meet admission requirements will be based on ranking by GPA from previous Nursing studies. Quota size is determined by the availability of hospital placements. Where the quota is filled, no further places will be offered.

All students are required to satisfy the applicable .

If students do not meet the English language requirements they may apply to study a University-approved . On successful completion of the English language program, students may be admitted to an award program.

Requirements for professional experience placements

Practical experience is an integral component of the program and each student is required to undertake and satisfactorily complete 1240 hours of practical experience (1240 hours of professional experience placements).

Progression into practical courses is dependent upon a pass grade in theoretical and other practical courses which have been set as prerequisites.

Applicants must be willing to undertake and submit the requirements of the HQporner and Queensland Health for practical placement. Please refer to the applicable for Nursing and Midwifery Students.

Mandatory Documents required prior to commencing residential schools and ANY clinical placements in the program:

• Blue Card or Working with Children Check or evidence of registration with AHPRA

• Australian Police Certificate

• Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate (CPR)

• USQ Student Declaration

• Queensland Health Student Orientation Checklist (Queensland students only)

• Queensland Health Student Deed Poll (Queensland students only)

• Queensland Health iLearn Modules (Queensland students only)

• Completed Vaccine Preventable Evidence Form

All students must also provide the following immunisation evidence prior to commencing residential schools and clinical placements:

• Hepatitis B immunisation evidence

• Measles, Mumps and Rubella immunisation evidence

• Varicella immunisation evidence

• Pertussis immunisation evidence

• Influenza immunisation evidence

• Tuberculosis Risk Assessment

Tasmanian students residing outside of QLD must provide evidence of:

• HIV and Hepatitis C of having antibodies

Commonwealth supported place

A Commonwealth supported place is where the Australian Government makes a contribution towards the cost of a students' higher education and students pay a , which varies depending on the courses undertaken. Students are able to calculate the fees for a particular course via the .

Program structure

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) comprises of 16 units/16 courses that all must be successfully completed to finish this degree. In particular, to graduate with the Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) students will be required to successfully complete:

• Midwifery practice experience courses by attending mandatory residential schools; and

• All unpaid midwifery practice experience requirements of this degree through the midwifery practice experience courses

Residential schools

The attendance requirement of residential schools within this degree is indicated by the following letters: V = Voluntary; O = Optional; C = Compulsory; R = Recommended; HR = Highly Recommended; M = Mandatory. There are three (3) courses with mandatory Residential Schools. These will occur:

Year 1, Semester 1:

• In the week prior to commencement of semester 1 attendance is required and again in week 12-15 (depending on the timetable) of Year 1, Semester 1 (course )

Year 2, Semester 1 (full-time students):

• Two weeks prior to commencement of semester 1 attendance is required ( and scheduled consecutively).

Year 3, Semester 1 (part-time students):

• Two weeks prior to commencement of semester 1 attendance is required ()

Year 4, Semester 1 (part-time students):

• Two weeks prior to commencement of semester 1 attendance is required ()

Students unable to attend must withdraw from the associated course. Residential schools will be conducted at the Ipswich campus or Tasmania (only students who reside in Tasmania will attend residential schools at the Southern Simulation Centre at the Royal Hobart Hospital's clinical school, Liverpool St, Hobart TAS 7000).

Midwifery Practice Experience Courses - these courses contain practical laboratories conducted during the mandatory residential schools:
